Pension FAQ
Short answers to the questions asked most often about the Montenegrin old-age pension, under the Pension and Disability Insurance Act.
When can I retire?
At 65 years with 15 godina of service. There is also a separate route: with 40 godina of service, regardless of age. See the pension age page.
Do women retire earlier than men?
No. In Montenegro the pension age is the same for both — 65 years for an ordinary pension and 63 years for an early one (čl. 17 st. 1 and čl. 17a). The law states one age for everyone, with no separate table by sex.
How much service do I need?
15 godina for an ordinary old-age pension. An early pension asks for the same service — 15 godina.
How is the pension amount calculated?
The personal coefficient (the average of your earnings across your whole career, against Montenegro's average earnings) is multiplied by pension service and by the value of one personal point. The current point value is not published — see the pension amount page for detail.
Is there a maximum pension?
No maximum amount is set. The law caps the personal coefficient at 4 (čl. 28), but does not cap total pension service — so that capped coefficient, multiplied by uncapped service, produces no bounded amount.
Can I retire early, and what does it cost?
Yes, at 63 years with 15 godina of service. It costs a reduction of 0,35 % for each month claimed early — and that reduction is permanent: it does not stop once you turn 65 years.
Does the pension get adjusted during the year?
Yes, three times a year — 1 January, 1 May and 1 September — based on price and wage movements. Pensions and the point value are never adjusted downward, even where the formula would produce a negative result.
